Ernie Harwell

It’s 1973 and I’m  ten years old. It’s a Friday night in July and it is raining like crazy and my dad says, “Let’s go into the garage, open the door and watch the storm and listen to the Tiger’s game”.  So dad grabs a PBR and I snag myself a Faygo and we set up two lawnchairs and open the garage door. These were those lousy chairs they used to make with a plastic-like cloth interlaced onto a flimsy metal frame that if you sat in them often enough the material would shred. The Tiger’s were playing the Texas Rangers in Arlington and the moment had arrived. My dad plugs in the radio, turns it on, tunes the dial to  the Great Voice of the Great Lakes and pure poetry comes streaming out of our Sears radio. Ernie Harwell along with his radio partner Paul Carey are calling the game. Now, I had heard Ernie so many times before. Whether it was in the backyard in Warren on a Saturday afternoon and dad was doing yard work or at Stoney Creek for a family picnic or hiding my radio under my pillow as the Tigers were playing in some far away land like…Oakland or Kansas City, this time was different. There was just something about being in our garage with my Dad and watching a rainstorm while listening to the Tigers. But what made it such a great night was that there were three of us in that garage. Me, Dad and Ernie. He IS such a part of all of our lives and has been for literally decades. Ernie was part of the family. He was the grandpa you wished you had. Even if you had never met him, you felt like you knew him. He was often the last voice I would hear before going to bed each summer night. I was lucky enough and honored to have met Ernie many times throughout my radio career. I only wished I could have told him how big a part he was in a ten-year old kid’s greatest memory…Ernie, in our hearts you will never be long gone.
